Pancake

Nights spent at Denny’s weren’t frequent but they were equally important to my journey. I remember the first night I had to sit there. I just couldn’t believe it.
It was cold & sketchy, but it was safe enough on the nights I couldn’t make my stay at Ventura #204. The eggs were terrible except for on Monday’s when the cook from DTLA was on the grill.

I ended up meeting and making an unexpected friend in a waitress named Doreen; an older white woman with a fluffy ponytail and a bad leg that dragged when she walked. She lived in the apartment complex directly next to Denny’s, and she loved her some Whitney Houston!

She had kind eyes, always had an encouraging word, and just lit up when she saw me. She’d bend the rules and poured me up hot Lipton orange tea all night long even though it wasn’t on the list of refillable drinks. We’d chat in between her tables until about 6:30am and she would let me sit until I could check in at Ventura #204.

That was my order; soft scrambled eggs with American cheese, crisp hash browns buttermilk pancakes with heavy butter and syrup, and a side of hot orange tea. Cold nights in Denny’s off Burbank is the inspiration behind this warm and comforting scent.
