Night Cap

When I first moved to Woodland Hills, I used to spend a lot of time at JOEY. One day, I was on my way home from the gym when something told me to stop there for lunch instead. My time in California was full of random moments like that, but this day felt different. I had this gut feeling that something out of the ordinary was going to happen. So I sat at the bar. One of the bartenders kept staring over at me, and after a while she finally said, “I’m so sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable by staring, but you’re just so strikingly beautiful.”

I couldn’t help but laugh because I had literally just left the gym. I was sweaty, in workout clothes, and felt anything but beautiful. I looked over the drink menu, but nothing caught my eye, so I asked miss googly eyes to make me something GOOD.

She came back with the prettiest cocktail: gin, lychee syrup, cherry juice, a lychee fruit, topped with whipped cream and an orange peel. It was gorgeous…and even better, it was Happy Hour, so it was delicious and cheap. I told her, “Keep ’em coming.”

About an hour later, a group of girls sat down in the corner, and within minutes we’d become instant bar friends. Around the same time, three older Black women walked in dressed to the NINES….VERY MUCH giving rich, fly auntie vibes.. I leaned over to my new friends and said, “They know somebody.”

A few moments later, in walks Jamie Foxx. & sure enough, he went straight over to greet the fly aunties.

Once he finished talking to them, I called out, “Come talk to me when you’re done over there!” That unexpected encounter ended up being the “out of the ordinary” thing my intuition had been telling me about all day. My gut was right.

What was supposed to be a quick lunch turned into an all-day adventure. I sat at that bar from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m., sipping those lychee cocktails, laughing with complete strangers who became new friends, and soaking up one of those perfectly random California days that you couldn’t have planned if you tried.
